  • Alive and Brel

The finest songs from the iconic master of the modern chanson, Jacques Brel, come to life when this trio of singers perform their cabaret revue, ‘Alive and Brel’. Featuring well-known classics such as 'Ne me quitte pas/If You Go Away', 'Amsterdam' and 'Jacky', Brel’s music is famed for its emotional power and ironic wit. His songs have been likened to miniature films, laced with dark and passionate observations which paint a tableau of imperfect humanity. The songs of Jacques Brel are guaranteed to bring a smile to your lips or a tear to your eye.

‘A pleasant surprise package…very capable of depicting Brel’s catalogue. The blending of the three voices was particularly pleasing and gave the performance originality.’—Simon Bishop, Stage Talk Magazine

An enchanting way to end an evening.’—Hereford Times

‘Alive and Brel’ made its debut as part of Three Choirs Plus in Hereford in 2012 and also featured in the Festival fringe in Gloucester the following year. Since then, the trio have brought their intimate cabaret to studio theatres across the region. Director Tim Brown was an assistant lay clerk in the Hereford Cathedral Choir; he has fronted several jazz combos in Hereford and currently sings with Hereford’s Ethelbert Consort. Steve Allan was a mainstay of musical theatre across North London, and has taken many leading roles. Alison Allan, a graduate of the Mountview Theatre School, has performed in cabaret, musical theatre and light opera. She was the lead singer with the Piccadilly Orchestra in its residence at the Savoy Hotel and during its tour of the Far East. Accompanist John Weller is the Head of Music at the Hereford Sixth Form College. Flautist Esther Kay studied at the Guildhall School and read Music at Oxford before becoming a freelance copyist and music editor.
